Brenda Green, 70 year old athlete from Middlesex, thought her sprinting days were over when she developed serious problems with her hip. Within weeks of an operation to resurface the hip, carried out at St Anthony's Hospital, Cheam, she was back on the track winning gold medals. The pioneering procedure, which can be used instead of total hip replacement, was undertaken by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Gerry Kavanagh FRCS.
A mere four months after the operation, Brenda entered the British Veterans Indoor Championships at Birmingham and won the gold medal for the 200 metres sprint. ‘To me, the operation is pure magic’, said Brenda, who had been in considerable pain with her arthritic hip for some time.
Since then she has entered and won at several local meetings, ‘just to keep my hand in’ while training for the European Championships in Finland in July. In a local league competition she won the 100 metres for people of 50+ (there isn't one for older people) and came 3rd overall in the whole event which was for people from 35 to 60!
She came 4th in the Hammer Throwing and was asked to compete in the javelin although she had not handled one before. She came 4th in this (having been told which way to throw it!). And all this from a grandmother who didn't even take up sport until she was 52!
Now she is busily signing up for several more major sporting events and will be forever grateful for the surgeon and hospital who made it possible. Thehip resurfacing procedurewas developed by 2 Birminghan surgeons, Mr Derek McMinn FRCS and Mr Ronan Treacy FRCS in conjunction withMidland Medical Technologies Limited.
