WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY (also known as Obesity or Bariatric surgery)
It is estimated that 1 2% of the population is seriously overweight. It is not just a question of the risk of developing Type II diabetes, cardio-respiratory disease, liver disease, hip and knee joint failure and other musculoskeletal disorders, it is a question of when these problems will occur. The NICE Health Technology Appraisal recognises that many such people are incapable of losing weight without intervention and that weight loss or bariatric surgery can not only achieve life-changing results for patients but at the same time is cost effective in reducing the inevitable costs that will be incurred if no action is taken.
The Bariatric Surgery Team at St.Anthony’s Hospital Cheam is led by Consultant Surgeon Mr.AGTW Fiennes and the team has been undertaking bariatric surgery since 1997 (operative mortality 0). Every patient considered for surgery is evaluated personally by the operating surgeon. All patients undergo psychiatric evaluation and have access to specialists in metabolic medicine and dieticians. The team has expertise in the full range of surgical procedures including gastric banding and gastric bypass. By definition, morbidly obese patients are high-risk candidates for surgery and the team is fortunate in having the collaboration of 3 consultant anaesthetists with major expertise in this area. Surgery without specialist behavioural assessment and on-going support can be not just ineffective in the longer term but positively dangerous.
Just as the expertise and experience of the team is crucial to the outcome, so is the setting in which the service is provided. St.Anthony’s Hospital has a fully equipped ITU with resident anaesthetic staff. The wide range of services offered, including cardiac surgery, means that the hospital is well prepared to deal with possible complications.
The programme at St.Anthony’s is unique in offering patients a free monthly Support Group which is an important part of helping patients achieve and maintain the weight loss that is essential to their future.
