Menopause Clinic

The menopause is the cessation of periods. From about the age of 40 a woman’s ovaries show signs of decreased activity and they produce less hormone (oestrogen). One consequence of this is the alteration in the pattern of the monthly periods until eventually they stop.

Although many women go through the menopause without any problems, many others experience distressing symptoms which result from the lack of oestrogen affecting the blood vessels, skin, bones or the genito-urinary system. These symptoms often start before periods have ceased. Broadly, there are three groups of women who may benefit from attending the Menopause Clinic:

  • those who are approaching or who have just reached the menopause and have symptoms which are severe enough to make them seek help
  • those who may have minimal symptoms but are concerned about long term prevention of bone loss, strokes or heart attacks especially if they are at higher risk of these problems
  • women who have gone through an early menopause or who have had their ovaries removed surgically
