02 February 12
Local Cheam entrepreneur Roger Davies, 63, is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with him next September in aid of St Raphael’s Hospice, Cheam, Surrey, to celebrate the Hospice’s 25th anniversary.
He says "This is the chance of a lifetime. You don't have to be super fit. I will give tips and advice for everyone. The euphoria isn't reaching the summit, but the journey getting there. It's six days up the mountain and one day down. There are five terrains – tropical rainforests, shrubland, grassland, rocks and ice and snow. Come and join me and raise much needed funds to help St Raphael's Hospice."
It is the second time Roger will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
In February this year, five days before he was due to start his trip, Roger's right knee swelled up and Gerry Kavanagh, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at St Anthony's, the sister organisation to St Raphael's Hospice located on the same site, drained it and put in a lubricant so Roger could be mobile. On his return, he had a total knee replacement with a Stryker triathlon knee which means he has a metal knee. "I am looking forward to climbing the mountain with my new knee," he says.
Roger is a true adventurer and has been on a North Pole trek. He completed that trip in 2008 a year after having a heart attack. On that occasion, Charles Pumphrey, consultant cardiologist at St Anthony's, fitted a coronary stent in his heart, but Roger didn't see why he should cancel his trip. "Life must go on," he says, "The stent enabled me to pull a sledge for 350 miles. We crossed huge amounts of desolate terrain and we also had a polar bear attack. I found it so exhilarating and I want to do it again."
Roger is also due to row, as part of a team of 7, the length of the river Thames as part of 'Queens 60th Celebratory Pagaent on Thames', taking place on 3rd June.
Further to this, he is also planning to complete the 3 peaks climb in 24 hours, which will aid in his training for Kilimanjaro!
