    Dr. Felix Chua

Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine, St Georges Hospital. Special Interests: Interstitial Lung Disease.

    View full profile

Dr Chua is the lead clinician for the interstitial lung disease (ILD) service at St George's Healthcare Trust. The ILDs are complex conditions that may affect a wide range of individuals, including those with rheumatological conditions or those who have been exposed to certain drugs or environmental agents.

There is also a large group of entities for which a cause has not been identified. The common link amongst all these diseases is their tendency to form lung scarring, a complication known as pulmonary fibrosis. My job is to secure an accurate diagnosis, ensure prompt treatment and closely monitor these patients over time.

    Special Areas of Interest

The clinical aspects are the most satisfying, particularly when patients are well managed and a successful clinical outcome is achieved. This is especially so when the clinical situation is complicated or still evolving. In such situations, I am reliant upon and enjoy engaging with highly knowledgeable and dedicated colleagues from diverse specialties and clinical backgrounds.

I studied medicine at Downing College, Cambridge and Kings College Hospital, London, qualifying in 1984. I trained in General Surgery, Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery for five years before starting a career in plastic surgery in 1989. As well as operating at Roehampton, The Lister and Guys and St Thomas’s Hospitals, I gained a Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship in the USA, receiving certification of higher surgical training in plastic surgery in 1996.
Since 1997, I have been Consultant Plastic Surgeon at St. George’s Hospital in Tooting, Europe’s largest teaching hospital. Here, I am training the country’s next generation of plastic surgeons as part of my continuing commitment to the NHS.

In addition to being a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, I am a member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand.

My private interests are in aesthetic surgery, skin and hand surgery. The aesthetic surgery sector is changing rapidly with the National Care Standards being introduced in 2002 which regulate this speciality. Whilst there are many people offering plastic surgery, not all are fully accredited plastic surgeons. With a full training in plastic surgery both in the UK and USA, I feel I am best placed to advise patients on the risks, as well as the benefits of aesthetic surgery.

        Mr. Pawan Minhas

Consultant Neurosurgeon St.George's Hospital (Atkinson Morley's Wing). General Neurosurgery, spinal (including complex spinal), vascular and skull base neurosurgery.

        View full profile

I qualified from Nottingham in 1991 and undertook my neurosurgical registrar training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. This included research using Positron Emission Tomography for cerebral blood flow and brain metabolism studies in patients with head injury and subarachnoid haemorrhage. At Cambridge, I spent the final two years of my clinical training learning skull base neurosurgery under Mr David Hardy, one of the pioneers of modern acoustic neuroma surgery in this country

My NHS practice is based exclusively at St George’s Hospital, in the new Atkinson Morley Wing. My subspecialist interests are in spinal, vascular and skull base neurosurgery.

I see modern neurosurgery as a rapidly evolving discipline where despite the technical complexity and potential dangers of some of the procedures undertaken we are consistently aiming for better outcomes for our patients. This has been achievable through advances in CT and MRI imaging; better understanding of microsurgical anatomy; the ability to perform radical, definitive operations through less invasive approaches; and by no means least in importance – effective working within multidisciplinary teams.

A good example of this approach is in the treatment of unstable spinal fractures. Traditionally, such patients may have been confined to flat bed rest for many weeks with frequent potential for complications such as chest infection, venous thrombosis, or delayed neurological deterioration – perhaps from inadvertent turning. The X-ray opposite shows a patient with an unstable lumbar spinal fracture that has been fixed operatively with titanium pedicle screws. The spine is then immediately stable allowing the patient to begin mobilising the day after the operation and be protected from potential delayed neurological deterioration.

Careful selection of operative timing, achieving a technically secure fixation with the right instrumentation and minimising risk of operative wound infection were paramount in achieving a good outcome, as indeed was the role of the anaesthetist in assessing when to operate and the physiotherapist in post operative rehabilitation.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, St. George's Hospital. Shoulder and Elbow surgery including joint replacement and arthroscopy.

I qualified as a doctor from St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College. My basic surgical training was at the Royal Free Hospital and my Orthopaedic Training was based at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. I then spent a year in Richmond, Virginia, USA training in arthroscopy before completing my shoulder training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.

My NHS practice is entirely shoulder and elbow surgery. This includes the treatment of arthritis (including joint replacement), sports injuries and fractures.

My particular area of interest is the use of arthroscopic techniques in the treatment of both joints. Arthroscopy provides many advantages in treatment as it allows an excellent view of the joint that is not always possible with conventional techniques. The small incisions are also more cosmetically acceptable and facilitate a more rapid recovery. It is not possible to treat all conditions in this manner although the list is increasing yearly.

Mr Topping is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon specialising in all aspects of body contouring procedures after weight loss and pregnancy. Adam routinely performs other general plastic and cosmetic surgical procedures such as facelifts.

He has been formally trained as a plastic surgeon and is on the GMC Specialist Plastic Surgery Register. He is a member of BAAPS and BAPRAS, the 2 internationally recognised plastic surgical societies.

Adam specialises in the following procedures following dramatic weight loss:

            Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck)

Using modern surgical techniques, Adam produces an attractive hour glass figure and a trim tummy profile and in so doing, removes the folds and creases that can lead to infection and be unsightly.

            Breasts

Breast appearance can change dramatically after weight loss with emptiness in the upper parts and excess drooping. Adam can offer breast uplifts, either with or without implants depending on preference, to restore breast shape and enhance the hour glass look.

            Arm and thigh lifts

This technique helps to tighten and lift the skin of the inner arms and thighs. The key is to keep the scarring to a minimum if possible and to remove the folds and creases, particularly in the inner thighs, and the drooping skin down the inner arm.
