CT Scanner

CT SCANNING

The CT scanner at St.Anthony’s is one of a new generation of extremely fast scanners making it possible to obtain high quality images of all parts of the body, even ones constantly on the move such as the heart. The images captured are cross sectional and can be used to produce highly detailed three dimensional reconstructions. The speed of scanning also has benefits in terms of reduced radiation dose.

The CT scanner is located in the Imaging department on the first floor of the hospital.

The scanning department works by a system of appointments and is open 9.30 – 16.30hrs Monday to Friday. Telephone 020 8337 6691 extn. 2366

Procedure

Inside the examination room a Radiographer will position you on the table making you as comfortable as possible.  You will be required to remain completely still while the scans are taken. Scan times will vary according to the are under examination and the diagnosis being sought. An intercom system allows two-way communication between the Radiographer and the patient. In some cases, an injection of contrast medium may be given into a vein in your arm or hand during the procedure.

Side effects

The CT scan is painless, however, if you have an injection of contrast medium you may experience warmth at the site of injection, generalised flushing and/or an unusual taste in your mouth. These side effects will pass off within a few minutes.

Results and follow-up

Your CT scan will be interpreted by a Consultant Radiologist and the results will be forwarded to your referring clinician within a few days.

Please do not hesitate to talk to a member of staff if you have any questions.
