Cosmetic Surgery

Both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery is undertaken at St Anthony's Hospital. Cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure with the aim of enhancing your physical appearance. The function of reconstructive plastic surgery is to repair damaged skin and soft tissue (the superficial fascia). The damage may be the result of injury, disease or a congenital birth defect. The aim is to restore it to a level that is as close to normal as possible.

The two surgeries go hand in hand: a surgeon’s understanding of the aesthetics of form and appearance can inform their reconstructive work; similarly reconstructive surgery broadens the understanding of form and structure, which can inform the surgeon's cosmetic work.

Our surgeons perform all common cosmetic surgery procedures. These include, but are not limited to:

  1. Breast enlargement (Augmentation)
  2. Breast reduction
  3. Breast uplift/tightening (Mastoplexy)
  4. Gynaecomastia
  5. Face and neck lift
  6. Endoscopic brow lift
  7. Facial peeling
  8. Botox injections
  9. Facial Fillers
  10. Nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
  11. Eyelid rejuvenation (Blepharoplasty)
  1. Prominent Ear Correction (Pinnaplasty)
  2. Liposuction
  3. Liposculpture
  4. Fat transfer and collagen implants
  5. “Tummy tuck” (abdominoplasty)
  6. Arm reduction (brachioplasty)
  7. Thigh Lift
  8. Hand and Wrist Surgery
  9. Removal of moles and skin lesions
  10. Body contouring following massive weight loss

The removal of moles and other skin lesions is an important part of the service provided at St Anthony's. Moles are often normal or harmless but can sometimes be unsightly, requiring surgical excision. However, in some cases they can develop into malignant melanoma, which is an aggressive form of skin cancer. Regular skin checks are important to check for suspicious lesions. If necessary, a biopsy can be taken and further investigations carried out. The type of treatment you receive will depend on the size, location and progression of your cancer.

The NHS website offers comprehensive advice on these cancers

Mr Mark Soldin has a special interest in post-weight loss cosmetic surgery. After a massive amount of weight is lost, the skin can hang in loose folds which can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing.

The areas affected tend to be similar in each patient. Mr Soldin will optimise the shape of abdominal overhang, empty or droopy breasts and buttocks, inner thigh and arm excess and back folds. He will remove excess skin, unwanted scars, stretch marks, excess fat and can tighten the stomach muscles.

Treatment and procedures are tailored to the individual patient. Many patients feel such procedures capitalise on and consolidate their weight loss. It is highly important to have a stable weight before undergoing such surgery.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, there is a certain degree of risk involved, associated with anaesthesia, infection and scarring.

  1. Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you, and any measures you can take to limit risk. He will make sure you feel at ease before going ahead.
  2. All our cosmetic surgeons have had specialist training and extensive experience in their field of expertise, as well as holding strong NHS, teaching and research affiliations.
  3. We take every measure to minimise the risk of complication. Our concern with quality and standards is reflected in our impressive control of infection in our hospital.

Your consultant will be with you every step of the way on your surgical journey, and in the event of post-operative complication.
